AUTHOR BIO
"She sashayed up to him like a vixen on heat, flame red hair and eyes like molten honey."
- Harry's World  (p.229)

A. B. Patterson is an award-winning Australian writer who knows first-hand about corruption, power, crime and sex.  He was a Detective Sergeant in the WA Police, working in paedophilia and vice, and later he was a Chief Investigator with the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Born in Sydney, he grew up in Europe, returning to Australia as an adult and commencing his career in law enforcement, and other government agencies.  He now lives in Sydney.

His multiple award-winning, debut novel, Harry’s World, introduced the jaded and flawed PI Harry Kenmare. Harry’s Quest was the sizzling, award-winning sequel in the PI Harry Kenmare series. Harry’s Grail is the explosive sequel to the first two Harry Kenmare novels.
His Harry Kenmare short stories, some previously published in the USA in Switchblade magazine, were gathered together for the first time in Harry Kenmare, PI – At Your Service.

He has had short stories, all dark and mostly crime, published in various anthologies and magazines, including Switchblade, Pulp Modern, and Econoclash Review.
He was selected to do the novelization of the indie Australian film by Nathan Hill, Jasper: The Gloves Are Off.  The resulting novella was published by Uncle B. Publications in the USA.
He has also been the contributing editor and co-editor of two anthologies of crime stories: To Serve, Protect, and Write and Romy Lives.

His hard-boiled, gritty, and noir writing style has been likened to that of Raymond Chandler and Ken Bruen, whilst his eroticism has been compared to Henry Miller.

He is an ardent supporter of the freedom of expression for writers and other artists, and is a proud committee member of the Independent Fiction Alliance in the USA.

More about me - my themes...

Okay, let's get past the official blurb above, and talk about what makes me tick.  I read an article somewhere, in amongst all the stuff I've read about writing and being an author, that said you should pick 7 themes that define you as an author.
Now, I never like being told I "should" do anything.  I actually think the word "should" is worthy of eradication from the English language, or at least being put on the "almost never use" list.  To me, it has become synonymous with people trying to control others (one of my themes - power).

Anyhow, I moved past my objection to "should" and thought that it would be actually a very worthwhile exercise to try and isolate 7 themes for me as an author.  I think reflecting on one's themes is very valuable in focussing the mind, and therefore the writing.  Which, as an author, is what it is all about.

So, here they are, the 7 themes for my work:
1.  Corruption.
2.  Crime.
3.  Sex.
4.  Power.
5.  Justice.
6.  Liberty.
7.  Masculinity.

More discussion to come...

"She looked me in the eye, longer than the situation needed, and then longer than decorum permitted. There was a smouldering desire in those beautiful blues. My erection completed itself."
- From the Harry short story, "Little Rich Street Girl", in Harry Kenmare, PI - At Your Service  (p.10)
