ARRIVED AUGUST 2020
Harry Kenmare, PI - At Your Service (A collection of short stories.) PI Harry Kenmare loves gorgeous women, fine wine, and Irish whiskey. And he loves to see justice done. He’s old school: results matter, methods don’t, and political correctness can go to hell, along with the corrupt Establishment. The seven stories collected here have Harry doing what he does best and telling it to you himself, as he goes hard, very hard, at work and at play. In these PI cases, Harry gets down and dirty across Sydney society, from the supposedly respectable to the openly seedy. He mixes it up with an obscenely colourful cast of characters: bikies, druggies, sensational strippers, corrupt cops, triads, and even a paedophilic politician, to name a few. Harry takes on the city, dishing out his loving, his hatred, and a truckload of brutal karma. Dark, debauched, and disturbing, Harry Kenmare’s world is a high-octane thrill ride for hard-core crime fiction addicts. But you’ll need to buckle up and bite down. Only readers with cast-iron fortitude need apply! Purchase details - see below... |

THE FIRST NOVEL!
Harry's World PI Harry Kenmare is a prehistoric private detective in an unfriendly modern world. His life revolves around drinking, fine food, smoking, and fast women, preferably the ones he has to pay for, in cash. So what better CV for trawling through Sydney's corrupt social and political elites, who cravenly chase power and wealth behind veneers of respectability. In this collection of seedy episodes, Harry is a dinosaur on a mission of justice, looking to shatter the hypocritical façades. And the rules don't always apply. Join him in the jungle of 21st century Port Jackson, where little is as it seems, and none of it is pretty. Except, of course, those gorgeous by the hour girls. |

MY WORK APPEARING in ANTHOLOGIES, MAGAZINES, and ELSEWHERE
"Little Rich Street Girl" - short story in Switchblade Special Edition of Issue 3.
October 2017 This is more of my PI Harry Kenmare, but written in the first person, so a different approach. I'd often wondered about writing in the first person (Chandler, Macdonald, and many other hard-boiled crime writers do it), so I thought a short story was the ideal way to experiment. My Harry novels will stay in the third person, just because I find the multiple points of view give a lot of flexibility with the characters. But I think you'll love my foray into the short story world. And I'm working on more. This short story is only available in Switchblade, so you'll need to grab a copy on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/0998765031/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1508276249&sr=1-4&keywords=switchblade+issue But I'll give you a taster with the opening lines: "Coagulating semen clung to the lock of grubby blonde hair dangling down her cheek. Obviously not all of a previous load had gone down her throat. I guessed she wasn’t concerned about the finer points of her appearance." "White Powder, Black Leather, Grey Badges" - short story in Switchblade Issue 4.
January 2018 PI Harry Kenmare is back for his second appearance in short story format, and in the first person again. Drugs, bikies, corrupt cops - Harry mixes it up in this sleezy tale. Oh, and fear ye not, there's some sex in there, too! This story, like the last, is only available in Switchblade, so Amazon is the place to grab it, either paperback or Kindle: www.amazon.com/dp/099876504X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1515913166&sr=8-2&keywords=switchblade+issue Enjoy! "Wankers" - short story in Switchblade Issue 8.
February 2019 PI Harry Kenmare is back for his third appearance in short story format, and in the first person again. This time it's peep shows, army veterans, government cover-ups and corruption. Nearly forgot, sex, too! This story, like the last, is only available in Switchblade, so Amazon is the place to grab it, either paperback or Kindle: www.amazon.com/Switchblade-Issue-B-Patterson-ebook/dp/B07MXRYJ4H/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=switchblade+issue&qid=1547898772&sr=8-6 Enjoy! "Blue Angel" - short story in Econoclash Review Issue 4.
May 2019 My first published short story not involving my PI Harry Kenmare. This one is still crime, but with a supernatural element merged into the story. Also my first effort at mixing genres. So, here you'll get my trademark detectives, vice and corruption. But you'll encounter a sexy ghost into the bargain! This story is only available in Econoclash Review, so Amazon is the place to grab it, either paperback or Kindle: www.amazon.com/EconoClash-Review-Quality-Cheap-Thrills/dp/1091794154/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2193MLQITGPO1&keywords=econoclash+review+4&qid=1559979175&s=gateway&sprefix=econoclash%2Caps%2C766&sr=8-1 Enjoy! "Childhood's End" - short story in the crime anthology, Coming Through in Waves.
February 2021 I've been a fan of Pink Floyd since seeing The Wall as a teenager - back in the days when you could sit in the back row of the dingy little cinema and smoke your packet of 10 cigarettes! And we did. How times have changed... Anyway, I was intrigued when I saw this project being managed by the editor T. Fox Dunham - pick a Pink Floyd song title and then write a crime story with that same title. After I initially asked for "Comfortably Numb", which had already been taken, I settled on "Childhood's End", a song I admittedly hardly knew, and I was thrilled when Fox accepted the resulting story. Aside from a superb lineup of crime authors in this collection, part of the proceeds of all sales goes to the US Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The editor, Fox, is a cancer survivor, hence the charity component. So, grab yourself a great read and help a great cause. Here's the Amazon link: BUY HERE Cheers, ABP |
Non-fiction anthology
Men's Accounts of Boarding School: Sent Away Published by Routledge UK, February 2021 This was a very personal project to be involved in. Over 10 years ago, I connected with a group in the UK, Boarding Concern, who provided a support network for boarding school survivors. Aside from slaying a few personal demons, I ended up with the honour and privilege of being able to be instrumental in putting together a book of accounts, of a very personal nature, from a wide range of men who had gone through the trauma of English boarding schools. It is indescribably wonderful to see Routledge publish the end result of a project that ran for about 8 years: from the initial canvassing of survivors to the final testament. I'm so proud to be a co-editor of, and also a contributing author to, this immensely important collection of personal stories. My short essay is entitled, "Antipodean Reflections", and appears as chapter 2.8 in the book. Special thanks and massive credit to my two co-editors, Margaret and Allison, who did so much to steer this project to glorious completion. My main work was in the earlier stages, and in the last couple of years Margaret and Allison have tirelessly driven the project home. My great hope is that, through this project, we have furthered the cause of combatting the insidious and inhumane business of boarding schools. To all the men who contributed to this book, my thoughts and solidarity forever. I feel your pain, as I know you feel mine. Cheers, ABP Available on Amazon and elsewhere. |
"Clean, Green, and Obscene" - short story in the crime anthology The Tattered Blue Line.
April 2022 One of my Detective Sergeant Harrington short stories was accepted to join the anthology The Tattered Blue Line, edited and published by Frank Zafiro, a fellow ex-cop turned crime fiction writer. I was thrilled to have my story line up alongside the excellent crime authors featured in this collection, all of whom have worked in law enforcement roles. The theme of the anthology was the challenges and controversies of contemporary police work. On Amazon Cheers, ABP |
